Working across disciplines, UNC-Chapel Hill environmental engineer Orlando Coronell and chemist Frank Leibfarth have developed a filtration resin that has thus far been successful in removing most PFAS from water.

The American Chemical Society awards undergraduates, majoring in chemistry, for their achievements as well as to encourage further study in the field. Four UNC Chemistry students are recipients of the 2020 American Chemical Society Undergraduate Awards:

Two University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill students are recipients of the prestigious Barry Goldwater Scholarship. The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation was established by Congress in 1986 to serve as a living memorial to honor the lifetime work of Senator Barry Goldwater.

The University of North Carolina System announced today that Marcey Waters is a winner of the University of North Carolina System Board of Governors’ Award for Excellence in Teaching. She is the Glen H. Elder Jr. Distinguished Professor of Chemistry.

Four faculty members and one graduate student in the Department of Chemistry are among the 25 who have been named winners of Carolina’s 2020 University Teaching Awards.

Carolina junior, Francis Lauzier, is pursuing a B.S. in Chemistry, with a focus in biochemistry. Recently, Lauzier presented a poster on Polyethylene Glycol Size and Protein-Complex Stability at the Biophysical Society Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA.

UNC Chemistry’s Frank Leibfarth, is a recipient of the 2020 Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship.
