We are pleased to share that undergraduate lab supervisors Maribel Borger, Calvin Grant, Tyler Motley and Kathleen Nevins are recipients of The Chemistry Extra Mile Award. The annual departmental award recognizes individuals for nurturing a positive environment, demonstrating crisis leadership, embracing collaborative problem solving and encouraging team-thinking. This team goes the extra mile in so many ways and their efforts are appreciated by faculty, staff, students and postdocs.
“The lab supervisors in Morehead have gone above and beyond to prepare the building for construction and re-open for instruction. They were quick to volunteer with the move of chemicals, instruments, supplies and furniture to keep the project moving forward despite obstacles along the way,” said Nita Eskew, director of undergraduate labs.
The team of four oversees the undergraduate laboratories as well as teaching and mentoring students and training teaching assistants. In the past year, the Morehead Laboratories have undergone a renovation project titled, “Lab of the Future,” that was designed to update the lab spaces to better align with modern teaching practices and learning environments. The team participated thoroughly in seeing the project to completion. They were involved in preparations for construction, including cleaning out the spaces and monitoring progress, all while adjusting to the reality of virtual labs during the pandemic.
“They have gone above and beyond in navigating us through Morehead construction and the associated hiccups, including cleaning mold from every drawer in the entire building. They participated with multiple moves of glassware and chemicals all while preparing for TA training and teaching. It goes without saying that none of this would have been possible without this team,” said Wei You, department chair.
Congratulations Maribel, Calvin, Tyler and Kathleen!
