Award-winning chemist Frank Leibfarth will deliver the University’s 2021 Winter Commencement address at 2 p.m. Dec. 12., in the Dean E. Smith Center. The Carolina chemist is known for his innovative research in developing synthetic polymers, commonly known as plastics, as well as teaching and mentoring.

We are pleased to announce that Carolina Chemistry seniors Julie Lee, Zijian Li and Rinco Wang are recipients of research awards from Honors Carolina that will support their Senior Honors Thesis.

Professor Jason Surratt received the Kenneth T. Whitby Award for outstanding contributions to aerosol research. Sponsored by the American Association for Aerosol Research, the purpose of the award is to encourage continued work in the field and ongoing support of such endeavors.

18 chemistry undergraduates have been selected for induction into the Phi Beta Kappa Society, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious academic honor society.

Frank Leibfarth joins Popular Science’s Brilliant 10 roster. The roster recognizes 10 early-career scientists and engineers across the nation whose innovative approaches to key issues have the potential to transform the world.

Alex Miller, associate professor of chemistry, is the recipient of the 2021 NC-ACS Distinguished Lecture Award. The award is given annually to a chemist within the NC-ACS section who has made significant and recognized research contributions to the chemical sciences.

The Chemistry Extra Mile Award goes to undergraduate supervisors Maribel Borger, Calvin Grant, Tyler Motley and Kathleen Nevins for nurturing a positive environment, demonstrating crisis leadership, embracing collaborative problem solving and encouraging team-thinking.

The annual Departmental Graduate Fellowships are awarded to outstanding graduate students in recognition of their contributions to their respective research disciplines.
