Department of Chemistry Announces 2024 Faculty Promotions

The Department of Chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is pleased to announce that six faculty members have received new appointments in the 2023-2024 academic year.  Three members received their promotions as of January 1st, 2024: Carribeth Bliem to Teaching Associate Professor, Bo Li to Full Professor, and David Nicewicz to W. R. Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professor. And three members will received their promotions as of July 1st, 2024: Leslie Hicks to both Full Professor and Sherman Fairchild Foundation Chancellor’s Term Professor, Frank Leibfarth to Royce Murray Distinguished Term Professor, and Gerald Meyer to Arey Distinguished Professor.

Professor Carribeth Bliem

 

Prof. Bliem earned a M.S. in Chemistry from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Utah. Promotion to Teaching Associate Professor is awarded to faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and service to the University.

 

Professor Bo Li

 

Prof. Li earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry from The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a B.S. in Chemistry from Bejing University. Promotion to Full Professor is awarded to faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in teaching, research and service to the university.

 

Professor David Nicewicz

 

Prof. Nicewicz earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a B.S. and M.S. in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Professors are awarded the prestigious W.R. Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professor distinction as the highest honor for their demonstrated excellence in teaching, research, and service to the university.

 

 

Professor Leslie Hicks

Prof. Hicks earned a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and a B.S. in Chemistry from Marshall University. Professors are awarded the Sherman Fairchild Foundation Chancellor’s Term Professorship as a special recognition of a College of Arts and Sciences faculty member for their exemplary research and teaching record and who has shown extraordinary dedication and leadership in diversifying science through mentoring. The Sherman Fairchild Foundation Chancellor’s Term Professor is the designated champion of the Chancellor’s Science Scholars program (CSS), UNC-Chapel Hill’s premier STEM scholarship program.

 

Professor Frank Leibfarth

 

Prof. Leibfarth earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, Santa Barbara and a B.A. in Chemistry and Physics from the University of South Dakota. The Royce Murray Distinguished Term Professorship was established in honor of emeriti Chemistry Faculty member Royce Murray to recognize an outstanding scholar, teacher, and researcher in the Department of Chemistry. 

 

Professor Gerald Meyer

 

Prof. Meyer earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin at Madison and a B.S. in Chemistry from the State University of New York at Albany. The Arey Distinguished Professorship was established to to recognize a renowned scholar, teacher, and researcher at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
