Department of Chemistry Announces 2026 Faculty Promotions

The Department of Chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is delighted to announce the promotion of two outstanding faculty members to the rank of Professor, effective January 1, 2026. These promotions reflect exemplary accomplishments in research, teaching, mentorship, and service to the University community.

Professor Erin Baker has been promoted to full Professor. A dedicated and influential scholar in her field, Professor Baker’s research has advanced key areas of chemical inquiry and contributed to the department’s strong research profile. In addition to her scholarly achievements, Professor Baker has served with distinction as a mentor to students and junior faculty. She has also taken on a new leadership role as the Director of Graduate Studies for the UNC Department of Chemistry, where she will guide the department’s graduate academic programs and support the professional development of our students.

Professor Matthew Lockett has also been promoted to full Professor. Professor Lockett is widely admired for his innovative research contributions and commitment to excellence in teaching and service. He serves as the faculty advisor for several student groups, and is a strong voice for students’ rights within the department. Through his work at UNC Chemistry, he has helped foster a collaborative and intellectually rigorous academic environment that benefits students and colleagues alike.
