2024 Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship Recipients

This year UNC Chemistry had a record number of applicants for Undergraduate Summer Fellowships and is able to support an unprecedented 14 Summer Research Fellowships within the department. Combined with the 8 UNC- Chapel Hill SURF Fellowship awardees, the department will have 22 fellowship recipients this year, all listed below. This funding will be applied to the undergraduate’s research projects in the summer of 2024, thus allowing them to continue their scholarship over the summer break. Congratulations to everyone who received an award, and good luck with the summer research!
Tommie and Billie Hinton Undergraduate Research Fellowship: This award provides support for undergraduate chemistry majors to conduct faculty-mentored summer research to support the development of gender equality, diversity and inclusiveness within the chemistry department and is open to all undergraduate chemistry majors to apply to.

Chapel Family Undergraduate Research Award: This award supports undergraduate chemistry majors through research and travel support and is open to all undergraduate chemistry majors to apply to.

E.C. Markham Summer Research Award: This award provides funds to perform research between a student’s junior and senior years and is open to only rising senior chemistry majors.

Thurman Freeze Scholarship Award: This award funds summer research between a student’s junior and senior years and is open only to rising senior chemistry majors.

The Rauch-King Undergraduate Student Research Award: This fund supports undergraduate student research and is open to all undergraduate majors.

The Maurice Bursey Undergraduate Research Award: This award provides support for undergraduate research and is open to all undergraduate majors.
- Abigail Lehr
The Anne Cooper Schout Chemistry Excellence Fund: This award provides support for undergraduate research. Preference will be given to students with financial needs, with eligibility determined by the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid, and is open to all undergraduate majors.

The Jackson-Chapel Award (Support from the Matthew Neely Jackson Undergraduate Research Award and the Chapel Family Award): This award provides support for undergraduate chemistry majors to conduct faculty-mentored summer research and is open only to rising senior chemistry majors.
- Catherine Campo
The Mia Pizzagalli and Ken Shelton Undergraduate Research Fund: This award provides support for undergraduate research and is open to all undergraduate majors.

UNC SURF Awards: The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program is one of many programs administered through the Office for Undergraduate Research and designed to enhance the educational experience of undergraduates by engaging them in research opportunities.
