Another Tar Heel in the AAAS

Professor Henry WhiteDistinguished Professor Henry S. White, Chair of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Utah, is one of the world's most accomplished leaders from academia, business, public affairs, the humanities, and the arts who have been elected members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences this year. Professor White is a Chapel Hill native who received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1978. As an undergraduate, Henry White worked in Professor Royce Murray's lab.

New members join one of the nation's most prestigious honorary societies and a leading center for independent policy research. Members contribute to Academy studies of science and technology policy, global security, social policy and American institutions, the humanities, and education.

"It is a privilege to honor these men and women for their extraordinary individual accomplishments," said Leslie Berlowitz, Academy President and William T. Golden Chair. "The knowledge and expertise of our members give the Academy a unique capacity — and responsibility — to provide practical policy solutions to the pressing challenges of the day."

 

Carolina Chemistry Alum Recognized

Professor Chrystal BruceAssociate Professor Chrystal Bruce with Erskine College, has received an Excellence in Teaching award from the South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities. Chrystal received her Ph.D. from Carolina after doing her graduate work in the Forbes lab.

Chrystal Bruce's work at Erskine College can be described only as excellent and exemplary. Teaching primarily general and physical chemistry, she offers challenging courses, for which she develops innovative labs, and she interacts well with students and colleagues in all disciplines. The Interim Vice President and Dean of the College remarks that "Chrystal Bruce is the kind of professor that students, colleagues, and administrators all wish there were more of."

Erskine President, Dr. David A. Norman, says of Chrystal Bruce: "Her love for her students and passion for the Erskine mission make Dr. Bruce an invaluable asset to our community."

 

Medicinal Chemistry Hall of Fame

Dr. M. Ross JohnsonM. Ross Johnson, cofounder and CEO of Parion Sciences and former CEO of Trimeris, has been inducted into the American Chemical Society's Medicinal Chemistry Hall of Fame. Johnson has been a member of the Carolina Chemistry Advisory Board, a long-time department collaborator, and was also an Adjunct Professor here from 1987 to 2000.

The ASC hails Johnson as "an internationally renowned medicinal chemist and expert in drug design and drug discovery who had a long and productive career as an inventor, discoverer, executive and entrepreneur in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries." His extensive contributions to drug discovery and development and basic science have resulted in over 300 scientific publications, invited presentations, 131 issued U.S. patents and three landmark primary research publications averaging over a thousand citations each.
